Meeting People Where They Are: Dr. Bernice King Launches MLK Week withย Hoops, Hopes & Dreams

Dr. Bernice King, Alexis Feaster, Jetalli Bellanton

As the countdown to Martin Luther King Jr. Day officially began, Dr. Bernice King set the tone for the week with intention, humanity, and storytellingโ€”hosting a powerful screening of Hoops, Hopes & Dreams, a film she serves on as Executive Producer, presented by Andscape.

Following the screening, Dr. King joined a thoughtful and dynamic panel conversation moderated by Tinisha L. Agramonte, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Opportunity & Inclusion Officer at The Walt Disney Company. The discussion also featured Producer Alexys Feaster and Executive Producer Dr. Jatali Bellanton, offering audiences insight into both the creative vision and cultural responsibility behind the film.

Hoops, Hopes & Dreams opens with a moment that immediately reframes history. Former UN Ambassador Andrew Young reminisces about his younger days on the basketball court, recalling a point guard with a strong left-handed jump shot. โ€œLater,โ€ he says, โ€œI realized it was Martin Luther King Jr.โ€ Youngโ€™s reflections portray Dr. King not only as a leader, but as a teammateโ€”a people person, always willing to defend others and connect through shared experience.

The film continues to humanize Dr. King through stories that extend beyond the pulpit. Journalist Jemele Hill appears in the film, noting that former President Barack Obama also knew his way around the basketball courtโ€”reinforcing the idea that basketball has long been a universal language of leadership, access, and community.

One of the filmโ€™s most resonant themes is that basketball is truly a worldwide sport, and the court itself becomes a place of teamwork, strategy, and trust. More importantly, it underscores a core truth about Dr. Kingโ€™s approach to leadership: he met people where they were. If that meant being on the basketball court to reach a certain crowd, thatโ€™s where youโ€™d find him. If it meant a pool hall, shooting pool and building conversationโ€”thatโ€™s where he would go. His love for basketball simply made that connection even more authentic.

By presenting these lesser-known dimensions of Dr. Kingโ€™s life, the film moves him beyond the stillness of statues and soundbites. It shows him as a full, complex Black manโ€”diverse in interests, relational in nature, and deeply invested in human connection. This is the kind of storytelling that belongs in our school systems, ensuring history remains alive, relatable, and honest for future generations.

During the evening, Dr. Bernice King issued a clear call to action: a challenge for individuals to donate $100 to The King Center, helping preserve the legacy and ensure that real Black history is never erased or lost.

Looking ahead, MLK Week continues with impactful programming, including Nothing to See Here: Watts Beloved Community Talks, featuring a talkback with T.I. Harris, and culminating on Sunday, January 18, with the MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awardsโ€”a celebration rooted in truth, legacy, and collective responsibility.

In every way,ย Hoops, Hopes & Dreamsย reminds us that change begins where connection livesโ€”and that meeting people where they are has always been the heart of the movement.

Teyana Taylor – Sinners – Paul Thomas Anderson- Golden Globes

Teyana Taylor

A Golden Night of Firsts, Power Plays, and Purpose at the Golden Globes

The Golden Globe Awards delivered a night that felt equal parts celebration and cultural temperature checkโ€”but the evening found its emotional center early with a defining moment: Teyana Taylor winning her first Golden Globe on her very first nomination.

Taylorโ€™s victory for Best Supporting Actress in One Battle After Another was more than a personal milestoneโ€”it was a statement. In a room filled with industry veterans and legacy power players, her win underscored the Globesโ€™ growing openness to honoring artists who shape culture beyond traditional Hollywood lanes. Gracious and grounded, Taylor used her moment to acknowledge Warner Bros. while uplifting fellow women of colorโ€”setting the tone for a night defined by purpose as much as prestige.

Warner Bros. Dominatesโ€”Amid Uncertainty

Hollywood showed up in force for Warner Bros., awarding the studio a sweeping slate of top prizes across film and television. Yet behind the applause lingered a quiet tension. With the studioโ€™s ownership and creative direction under scrutiny, the wins felt both triumphant and fragileโ€”proof of whatโ€™s possible when filmmakers are trusted, and a reminder of what could be lost if that freedom disappears.

That theme came into sharp focus when One Battle After Another writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson accepted Best Director. He credited WB co-chief Mike De Luca, recalling a decades-old promise that he would one day run a studio and โ€œlet directors do whatever the hell they want.โ€ On this night, that philosophy paid off.

The film itself dominated the ceremony, collecting Best Film (Musical or Comedy)Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actressโ€”with Teyana Taylorโ€™s historic win serving as its crowning moment.

Sinners Claims the Peopleโ€™s Crown

If One Battle owned the awards tally, Sinners owned the cultural conversation. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the genre-bending vampire race allegory took home Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, honoring the yearโ€™s most beloved blockbuster.

In his acceptance, Coogler made a pointedโ€”and widely applaudedโ€”statement about the importance of theatrical releases, thanking Warner Bros. for committing to the big-screen experience. In an era dominated by streaming-first strategies, Sinners stood as proof that audiences still crave communal moviegoingโ€”and will reward studios that believe in it.

Television Wins and Legacy Echoes

Warner Bros. Television continued the streak when HBO Maxโ€™s real-time medical drama The Pitt won Best TV Series (Drama). Creator R. Scott Gemmill thanked WBTV executives while standing alongside John Wells and Noah Wyle, subtly linking the showโ€™s success to the studioโ€™s storied history with ERโ€”a reminder that legacy, when honored thoughtfully, can still feel fresh.

A Night of Nostalgia, Resistance, and Renewal

Beyond the trophies, the ceremony carried a reflective, almost wistful energy. Veteran actors like Stellan Skarsgรฅrd, Jean Smart, and Noah Wyle were celebrated for decades-long careers, while presenters like George Clooney and Julia Roberts evoked a longing for a less polarized Hollywood.

At the same time, newer voices broke through. Netflixโ€™s animated phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters scored two wins, while international talentโ€”including Wagner Moura and Jessie Buckleyโ€”reinforced the Globesโ€™ increasingly global identity.

Still, the narrative repeatedly circled back to Warner Bros.โ€”and what it represents. In speeches and jokes alike, filmmakers and performers voiced skepticism about a future driven solely by algorithms and corporate consolidation. The message was clear: storytelling thrives when artists are trusted, theaters are valued, and cultureโ€”not convenienceโ€”leads the way.

The Takeaway

The Golden Globes werenโ€™t just about who wonโ€”they were about why it mattered. Teyana Taylorโ€™s first-ever Golden Globe on her first nomination symbolized a long-overdue recognition of multidimensional talent. Sinners proved that bold, theatrical storytelling still moves the masses. And Warner Bros.โ€™ sweeping night, set against a backdrop of uncertainty, reminded Hollywood of whatโ€™s at stake.

For one evening at least, the industry chose to celebrate courage, creativity, and convictionโ€”and that may have been the most meaningful win of all.

JOTOWN: Singer Johnathan Jones Jr Inks 2nd Soulful Album

Johnathan Jones Jr – Photo Credit Ai

โ€œMy heart is full todayโ€ is more than a feelingโ€”itโ€™s the foundation behind JOTOWN, the second album by Johnathan Jones Jr, released in loving honor of his late uncle, Bobby Jones.

As Johnathanโ€™s family recently gathered to celebrate Uncle Bobbyโ€™s life, the love in the room echoed the very spirit that inspired JOTOWN. Uncle Bobby was the kind of man who believed music was meant to be felt, not just heard. He loved the Motown era deeplyโ€”so deeply that its melodies became the soundtrack of everyday life. Whether at home or riding in the car, Motown classics were always playing, filling the air with warmth, rhythm, and meaning.

Those car rides became sacred moments. Sitting beside his uncle, Johnathan absorbed the timeless sounds of Smokey Robinson and other legendary artists from the golden age of soul. Long before he understood the technicalities of music, he understood how it made him feel. That exposure shaped him into an โ€œold soulโ€ at a young ageโ€”someone who valued storytelling, emotion, and authenticity over trends.

JOTOWN is the musical embodiment of those memories. Itโ€™s a bridge between generations, crafted to honor the era that shaped Johnathanโ€™s heart while remaining relevant for todayโ€™s listener. The album carries the smoothness, vulnerability, and emotional honesty that defined Motown, infused with a modern sensibility that speaks to love, loss, and healing.

More than an album, JOTOWN is a love letterโ€”to Uncle Bobby, to family, and to the music that binds generations together. It reminds us that while people may leave us physically, their influence lives on through memory, melody, and legacy.

Kym Whitley Celebrates New Movie ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ at Game Night

On July 25th lifetime memories were made at Mari Morrow’s infamous ‘friends like family’ game night; which was more than just cards, dominoes, and laughterโ€”it was a heartfelt celebration. ‘Friends like family’ gathered to welcome home actress Mari Morrow’s mom, Corrine Morrow, who finally returned from the hospice house to continue her recovery since her stroke 2 years ago which paralyzed the left side of her body.

Ms Morrow was so happy to recieve her floweres while she was still with us, and extremely happy to have so many visitors.

Adding to the excitement, comedy powerhouse Kym Whitley was in the house(literally). It felt only right to give a round of applause to the 2-time NAACP Image Awards (Outstanding Lifestyle & Selfโ€‘Help Podcast in 2022 Outstanding Arts & Entertainment Podcast in 2023) winner for her hit podcast 2 Funny Mamas alonside Sherri Shepherd. The crowd also celebrated her latest big move: landing a role in Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered on Netflix on Friday, July 24th. Ironically on movie night. It was a double celebration!

The room buzzed with joy as tables overflowed with classic favoritesโ€”Spades, Connect Four, Jenga, Unoโ€”and a friendly game of dominoes. All teams on deck were ready for friendly rivalries and plenty of smack talk.

Between the games, the laughter, and the love in the room, it was a night that reminded everyone of the joy of togethernessโ€”and the resilience of family.

Paula Patton Slays in Her Most Soul-Stirring Role Yet

Demetrius Grosse, Paula Patton
Demetrius Grosse, Paula Patton

Patton opened up about her transformative role inย Finding Faith, a new film that delves into pain, healing, and spiritual awakening.

Catching up with Paula Patton is always a pleasure. The last time we met was years ago when Robyn Thicke made the introduction and her glow hasnโ€™t dimmed a bit. But this time, our conversation wasnโ€™t just light-heartedโ€”it was profound.

A Role That Mirrors Real Life

In Finding Faith, Patton plays a woman fighting through emotional darknessโ€”and the parallels to her real-life journey are striking.

โ€œI didnโ€™t go through exactly what Faith did,โ€ she shared, โ€œbut Iโ€™ve known pain. Iโ€™ve numbed it with alcohol. And when I stopped drinking seven years ago, I had to strip away everythingโ€”the career, the friends, the egoโ€”and truly understand my worth.โ€

For Paula, this wasnโ€™t just another role. It was personal.

The Healing Power of Performance

โ€œThis film was cathartic,โ€ she explained. โ€œThere were moments where I had to revisit parts of myself that I thought I left behind. But doing that brought me healing.โ€

Her performance is more than actingโ€”it’s a reflection of growth and self-restoration. She channels past struggles into every scene, offering authenticity that resonates on screen.

Mental Health in the Spotlight

We touched on a topic that’s becoming more urgent in the entertainment world: the mental toll of embodying heavy roles. Paula is all for having therapists on set.

โ€œWhen youโ€™re acting for 15 hours a day, it becomes more than just a jobโ€”itโ€™s energy you carry with you,โ€ she said. โ€œAny support that helps artists stay grounded and emotionally healthy is essential.โ€

Her perspective brings attention to the importance of mental wellness in an industry that often demands emotional labor.

A Message of Hope and Redemption

Patton hopes Finding Faith connects deeply with viewersโ€”especially those struggling with guilt, loss, or spiritual doubt.

โ€œIt shows that thereโ€™s a way through,โ€ she said. โ€œThat God is always waiting. Prayer, faith, and grace can carry you through anything.โ€

Itโ€™s a film with heart, soul, and purposeโ€”crafted not only to entertain but to heal.

An All-Star Cast with Depth and Chemistry

Paula also gave a heartfelt nod to her co-stars, including Demetrius Grosse and Stephen Bishop.

โ€œDemetrius is incredibleโ€”so strong, grounded, and gentle. He acts from the gut,โ€ she said. โ€œAnd Stephenโ€ฆ well, audiences will see how his role unfolds. We had great chemistry across the board.โ€

In Theaters for a Limited Time

With Finding Faith, Paula Patton proves that vulnerability is her superpower. She delivers a layered performance that may very well be the most defining of her career.

Donโ€™t miss the chance to witness this unforgettable roleโ€”Finding Faith hits select theaters June 16th and 17th only.

Letโ€™s show up, show out, and let Hollywood know weโ€™re here for powerful stories with purpose.

Terisa Griffin: Powerhouse Vocals, Purpose-Driven Life

When Terisa Griffin steps on stage, she doesnโ€™t just singโ€”she commands the moment. Her voice is rooted in gospel. Her spirit is grounded in truth. The Louisiana native and Chicago-raised soulstress has carved out a lane all her own. Her journeyโ€”from the pulpit to the national spotlight on The Voiceโ€”is filled with grit, grace, and unwavering faith.

โ€œIโ€™m a little bit country, a little bit city, and a whole lot of grown,โ€ she laughs. โ€œLouisiana gave me my roots. Chicago gave me my wings.โ€

Terisa’s musical journey began in her fatherโ€™s church, surrounded by powerhouse sisters. โ€œI was five when I told my dad I could sing. And instead of saying โ€˜sit down,โ€™ he said, โ€˜come on.โ€™ That one moment taught me thereโ€™s always space for me in this world.โ€

Her latest single, When Youโ€™re Around Me, is deeply personal. It is a sultry ballad inspired by the emotional rollercoaster of nearly losing her husband to COVID. โ€œAfter he recovered, he brushed up against me in the hallway. I thought, โ€˜I fall in love every time Iโ€™m around you.โ€™ That moment birthed the song.โ€

Whether in studio or on stage, Griffin performs with full vulnerability. โ€œSomeone in that audience paid to forget their problems. I owe it to them to be there and take them on a journey,โ€ she says. โ€œI cry through my lyrics because I feel them. I want my audience to feel them too.โ€

That same raw honesty is what fans connected with during Season 3 ofย The Voice. Though she didnโ€™t win, Terisa walked away with something greaterโ€”clarity. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t about a title. It was about using the platform to build momentum,โ€ she says.

The Voice was a milestone in Griffinโ€™s career. Another highlight was The Oprah Winfrey Show, where she shared the stage with Diana Ross. Griffinโ€™s career is studded with pinch-me moments. โ€œWhen Diana passed me the mic, it was like getting stamped by royalty. If Diana Ross sees me, who can be against me?โ€

Beyond the music, Terisa’s heart beats for service. Her nonprofit, Better Love Yourself, provides college-bound youth with โ€œfootlockersโ€ full of essentialsโ€”and messages of affirmation. โ€œThese kids need to know theyโ€™re loved, that they matter, and that someone believes in them,โ€ she says. โ€œSometimes strangers show us the love we never got at home.โ€

The programโ€™s impact is personal and profound. โ€œIโ€™ve been invited to weddings, baby dedicationsโ€”some of these young people still call me โ€˜Miss Griffin.โ€™ Thatโ€™s my Grammy. Thatโ€™s my Oscar.โ€

As an independent artist in an industry obsessed with fitting in, Terisa has never wavered. โ€œI am that I am,โ€ she declares. โ€œIโ€™ve been told Iโ€™m too soulful or too different. But when you tamper with your DNA to please others, youโ€™re the one left unhappy. I refuse.โ€

Looking ahead, she dreams of duets with legends. She wishes Marvin Gaye were still alive for a duet. In the now, she hopes to sing with Raheem DeVaughn or Jill Scott. โ€œJillโ€™s humanness, femininity and her powerโ€”I love everything about her.โ€

To her fiercely loyal supportersโ€”the โ€œT-Hiveโ€โ€”Griffin says: โ€œThank you. Youโ€™ve loved me fiercely. You didnโ€™t have to, but you did. Iโ€™ll always show up for you.โ€

And she will. Because for Terisa Griffin, the stage isnโ€™t just where she singsโ€”itโ€™s where she shows up, fully and fearlessly.

This new film, directed by Fox Rich, goes beyond storytelling. It launches alongside a bold national movementโ€”#TimeIIWatch. The movement mobilizes over 1 million people in a synchronized watch party. It calls to action around justice and mass incarceration.

Justice advocates, Sibil “Fox” and Robert “Rob” Richardson (Fox and Rob), starred in the Oscar-nominated documentary TIME (2020). Today, they launched #TimeIIWatch: A Juneteenth Campaign for Freedom. This is a groundbreaking impact campaign. It is designed to amplify their long-awaited sequel TIME II: Unfinished Business. It also aims to ignite a nationwide movement for systemic justice ahead of its Juneteenth release. Fueled by the declaration โ€œTo Be Free is to Free Others,โ€ #TimeIIWatch transforms art into activism. It serves as a participatory action tool rather than mere entertainment. The initiative calls upon 1M+ people to join a revolutionary watch party experience. It transcends a typical movie premiere. It mobilizes collective action to finish the unfinished work of freedom that Juneteenth began.

TIME II marks the directorial debut of Fox Rich, who captivated audiences as the indomitable matriarch in TIME. She reflects on her visionary role. Her personal journey has evolved into a fight for the freedom of others. She declares, โ€œIf โ€˜TIMEโ€™ was the cry, โ€˜TIME IIโ€™ is the call. This project serves multiple purposes. It is an intentional call-to-action. It acts as a mirror. It reveals flaws in our justice system. It is a megaphone. This act confronts excessive sentencing. It challenges other unjust acts that enslave us through mass incarceration. An entire movement redefines what it truly means to be free in America.โ€

Rob Rich, who served 21 years in the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola), adds, โ€œWeโ€™re flipping the script. Films drive change in a new way. TIME II isnโ€™t about algorithms or streaming royalties, itโ€™s about people power. Freedom isnโ€™t free, and this campaign asks audiences to invest not just their time, but their voices.โ€

TIME II: Unfinished Business dives into the aftermath of Rob’s release from Angola after 21 grueling years. This release only marked the beginning. Their continued fight for freedom carries on. The battle now rages on for their nephew and โ€œfall partner,โ€ Ontario, who remains unjustly imprisoned. Fox and Rob confront the brutal realities that come with their unwavering commitment. They are determined to free their nephew. They also aim to honor the sacred promise they made to Rob’s sister to bring her baby boy home.

Barbara Walters “Tell Me Everything” Documentary Drops 6/23 on Hulu

Today, ABC News Studios announced the new feature-length documentary, โ€œBarbara Walters Tell Me Everything.โ€ It is produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howardโ€™s Imagine Documentaries. It will premiere Monday, June 23, on Hulu in the U.S. and later this year on Disney+ in select territories internationally after its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. This documentary comes from the producing team behind the 2024 Emmyยฎ Award-winning Best Documentary, โ€œJim Henson Idea Man.โ€ It is directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker and journalist Jackie Jesko. The film examines the broadcast legendโ€™s pivotal role in the history of journalism. It also highlights her pioneering example for women in the industry.

Barbara Walters (Sept. 25, 1929-Dec. 30, 2022) didnโ€™t just report the news โ€” she made news. She was a true American original and a trailblazer who broke ground for women in broadcasting. The documentary gives viewers an intimate and raw look at her astonishing career. It also explores her personal life. Additionally, it delves into the challenges she faced trying to balance it all as a woman in a male-dominated industry. Walters, in her own words, also reflects on the high price of fame and the legacy she hoped to inspire.

โ€œABC News broke new ground by hiring Barbara. They put a woman at the anchor desk. This move broke the exclusive preserve of men,โ€ said David Sloan, senior executive producer, ABC News. โ€œHer road was filled with peril and naysayers and navigating that was not without personal costs. Nevertheless, Barbara created a dazzling career that had no blueprint and changed broadcast journalism forever.โ€

Sara Bernstein, president of Imagine Documentaries, said, โ€œBarbara Walters was a true trailblazer. She changed the face of broadcast journalism. She set the gold standard. She completely transformed the cultureโ€™s consumption of celebrity journalism. In the process, she inspired generations with her determination, brilliance and humanity. Itโ€™s been a true privilege to collaborate with Jackie Jesko, Betsy West and the exceptional team at ABC News Studios. We canโ€™t wait to shine a light on Barbaraโ€™s iconic story with the Hulu audience.โ€

โ€œMy hope for the film is that audiences feel they get to know the real Barbara, in all her complexities. They will see her private struggles and her public triumphs,โ€ said Jesko. โ€œBarbara stayed a television fixture for five decades, battling rampant sexism, fierce competition, and a constantly evolving media landscape. Today, celebrities and politicians often choose to speak out on their own social media platforms. They prefer this over subjecting themselves to a news interviewer. Barbaraโ€™s story gives us the opportunity to explore the changing relationship between journalism, fame, and truth.โ€

The film features unaired footage from ABCโ€™s extensive archives. It includes interviews with people who knew and worked with the broadcast legend. Some of these people are Cindy Adams, Joy Behar, Connie Chung, Martin Clancy, and Andy Cohen. Others include Katie Couric, Peter Gethers, Lori Klein, and Cynthia McFadden. Bette Midler, Victor Neufeld, David Sloan, Katie Nelson Thomson, Chris Vlasto, and Oprah Winfrey are also among them.

โ€œBarbara Walters Tell Me Everythingโ€ is produced by Imagine Documentaries for ABC News Studios. It is linked to Latchkey Films. Jesko directed it. For Imagine Documentaries, the film is produced by Marcella Steingart, Sara Bernstein, Justin Wilkes and Meredith Kaulfers. Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Justin Wilkes and Betsy West serve as executive producers. Muriel Pearson is executive producer, and David Sloan is senior executive producer for ABC News Studios.

Tika Sumpter Shares Her IVF and Miscarriage Journey

Tika Sumpter

In a heartfelt appearance on the Tamron Hall Show, actress Tika Sumpter discussed her deeply personal journey. She opened up about her experiences with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and miscarriage. She shared insights into how she navigated these experiences with her daughter, Ella-Loren.โ€‹

A Family Conversation

Host Tamron Hall asked how much Ella knew about the IVF process and the miscarriage. Sumpter recounted their candid discussions. “We were like, ‘Mommy and Daddy are trying to get a sibling.’ And she’s like, ‘Okay, can I give you that shot?'” Sumpter shared, highlighting Ella’s eagerness to be involved. She humorously added, “I had to tell Ella to slow down.” Ella was very excited about administering the IVF shot.โ€‹

Sharing the Pain and the Hope

Sumpter revealed to Hall, for the first time publicly, that she had experienced a miscarriage during her IVF journey. “I did hold the child, and I miscarried,” she said. “But I’m glad that I can share with others the experience. While it was tough, it was still worth it for me. Ella was there and didn’t know I held the child, but she saw the shots.”โ€‹Allure+2Essence+2Essence+2

She emphasized the importance of sharing such experiences to support others. She stated, “I feel like I’m helping somebody else understand the process. Not only the process, but I’ve also been there with you. I am not the first one, and I won’t be the last. But we can share in that.”โ€‹

Looking Ahead

Sumpter reflected on her journey. She mentioned that she had earlier decided against attempting IVF again due to the emotional toll. Still, she is now considering it once more. She acknowledged the hope that IVF brings to many. She expressed a wish to be more informed about her health in future attempts. “I think IVF gives so much hope to so many people. I wish I had known more about my health before. I wanted to understand what was missing,” she said.โ€‹
